FREDERICK, Md.--The University of Mary Washington College Eagles
(5-0, 2-0 CAC), the top-ranked women's basketball squad in NCAA
Division III, visited Gov. Thomas Johnson High School gym Saturday
afternoon and handed the Hood College Blazers (0-6, 0-2 CAC) a
63-18 loss in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Hood led early on in the contest on two occasions, the last at
5-4 after a jumper by Sara Wastler at the 16:11 mark. But
back-to-back buckets by Ashton Mitchell gave the Eagles an 8-5 edge
moments later. Neither squad scored for the next 5:12 until a
Brooke Davis jumper snapped the drought midway through the half.
From there the Eagles outscored Hood 17-3 to close the half and led
27-8 at halftime.
The shooting woes continued in the second half for the Blazers,
who managed just three field goals in the stanza.
Wastler finished with seven points and six rebounds while
Allyson Lethbridge tallied five points and Whitney Schultheis and
Whitney Boyer added three apiece.
Liz Hickey paced the visitors with 15 points and nine boards
while Mitchell and Kaitie Clarkin chipped in 10 points apiece.
The Blazers return to action Monday at Philadelphia Biblical
University in a nonconference tilt at 6 p.m.
