LANGHORNE, Pa.--Junior Whitney Schultheis led all scorers with
20 points but it was not enough as the Hood College women's
basketball team (0-7) dropped a narrow 51-47 decision to
Philadelphia Biblical University (4-2) Monday evening in
nonconference action.
Schultheis and sophomore Whitney Boyer combined to score the
first seven points of the contest and the Blazers maintained the
upperhand for most of the first half. An old-fashioned three-point
play by Summer Mullen drew PBU even at the 3:10 mark and a jumper
by Lindsey Fornwalt gave the Crimson Eagles their first lead of the
half, 18-16, on their next possession. The lead flip-flopped four
more times before halftime and PBU went into the break clinging to
a 22-21 edge.
The second half was another see-saw affair which saw five ties
and six lead changes. Junior Jessica Parrish's jumper at the 9:13
mark knotted the score at 38-38 and neither squad connected on
another field goal for nearly three minutes. Then Natalie Nolt hit
a bucket with 6:33 remaining to regain the lead for the Eagles and
the hosts never trailed again. Hood didn't go away and kept it a
two-possession game down the stretch but the Eagles hit 4-of-7 from
the foul line in the final 1:01 to seal the victory.
Schultheis connected on 8-of-12 from the field, including four
three-pointers, for 20 points, matching the highest individual
single-game effort by a Blazer this season. Boyer finished with six
points and a career-high seven assists and two steals. Sophomore
Jen Willison added eight points and grabbed nine rebounds while
freshman Allyson Lethbridge had nine points and four boards.
The Blazers return home Thursday to host Capital Athletic
Conference rival Gallaudet University at 6 p.m. at Gov. Thomas
Johnson High School.
