FREDERICK, Md.--The College of Notre Dame came from behind in
the second half to defeat the Hood College women's basketball team,
64-59, in an Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference game Tuesday
evening at Gambrill Gymnasium.
The Gators (13-5, 7-1 AWCC) remain in first place in the AWCC
and handed the Blazers (3-16, 2-5 AWCC) their third straight
setback at home.
After misfiring on 12 of their first 13 shots from the floor,
the Blazers turned a 10-3 deficit into a 16-10 lead by scoring 13
unanswered points over a span of 4:22. The Gators regained the lead
on a triple by Kim Ordille with 2:48 to play in the stanza. But
senior Tamara Maggard buried a trey of her own just before the half
and Hood took a 25-24 edge into the break.
Hood stretched its lead to seven, 35-28, on a jumper by Jessica
Nease with 13:44 to play in regulation. Dame grabbed the lead back
three minutes later after a pair of free throws by Ashley Burley.
The two teams traded baskets on the next several possessions
before the Gators made their move. Dame ripped off nine straight
points to snap a 48-48 tie and assumed a 57-48 advantage with 4:51
to play.
A pair of free throws by Gloria Broady gave Dame its largest
lead of the game, 62-51 with just 1:53 to play. Sophomore Sara
Wastler and senior Dana Shook drained a pair of three-pointers in
the final 25 seconds, but it was not enough as the Gators held on
for the victory.
Willison registered team-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds for
her seventh double-double of the season. Shook dropped in 13 points
and picked off three steals while Wastler and Sara Hartlaub netted
eight points apiece.
Ordille paced the Gators and led all scorers with 18 points.
The Blazers return to action Sunday hosting AWCC foe Wilson
College at 3 p.m.
