FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's soccer team had the
unenviable task of facing the defending regular season conference
champion York College (Pa.) Spartans Wednesday in their home and
Capital Athletic Conference debut. The Blazers (0-3, 0-1 CAC) held
the potent Spartan offense to just two first-half goals, their
lowest output of the season, but were unable to find the back of
the net for the third straight game. Hood fell 2-0 to York (3-0,
1-0 CAC), ranked No. 18 in the latest D3Kicks.com national
poll.
Jill Stanley got the visitors on the board just 2:26 into the game
when she headed in a pass from Erin Kuhn to put York up 1-0 early.
Then in the 22nd minute, Emily Sullivan's shot appeared to be saved
by Hood keeper Rachelle Buhrman, but the official ruled that the
ball crossed the goal line and awarded the Spartans their second
goal of the contest.
York held a commanding 15-1 advantage in total shots after 45
minutes, but the Blazers regrouped in the second half and didn't go
away without a fight. Hood tallied three shots on goal on the
second stanza, but all were saved by Desiree Halaka.
Burhman put forth a phenomenal effort in net, turning away 13
shots on the afternoon.
The Blazers return to action Saturday at Waynesburg College in a
non-conference contest at 1 p.m.
