ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The sixth-seeded Hood College women's
soccer team (10-8-2) fell to the second-seeded St. Mary's College
(Md.) Seahawks (10-2-3) Tuesday by a 2-0 margin in the semifinals
of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
The Seahawks peppered Hood keeper Rachelle Buhrman and the
Blazer defense throughout the first half, but Buhrman held her
ground coming up with several clutch saves. The Seahawks finally
broke through in the 34th minute when Kaitlin Boswell headed in a
pass from Caitlin Evans for the game's first tally. Then just 1:09
later, Brianne Carroll notched her second goal of the season off a
cross from Sophia Esparza to quickly make it 2-0 St. Mary's.
The Blazers were unable to manage a shot on goal the entire
first half as the Seahawks possessed the ball in their offensive
zone for the majority of the period.
In the second half, Buhrman kept the Seahawks out of the net but
the offense was unable to cash in at the other end. Sophomore Cara
Jordan's two shot attempts on target were both denied by St. Mary's
keeper Marie Oben.
The Seahawks advance to the championship game Saturday and will
host fourth-seeded York College (Pa.), which upset top-seeded
Salisbury University, 3-1, on penalty kicks in the other semifinal.
