FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team (2-4)
registered its first back-to-back wins since the 2005-06 season
Monday evening following a 68-57 triumph over visiting Trinity
University (D.C.) (0-6) at Gambrill Gymnasium.
Prior to tonight, the last time the Blazers notched consecutive
victories was Feb. 24-25, 2006, against Mary Baldwin College and
the College of Notre Dame (Md.).
Junior Jen Willison had another spectacular performance in the
post for the Blazers, registering her 18th career double-double
with 30 points and 18 rebounds. After breaking the program's
single-game scoring record last Tuesday with 39 points against
Wilson College, the junior forward is believed to be the first Hood
College women's basketball player ever to record consecutive
30-point games.
Both squads got off to a slow start. The first half saw five
ties and five lead changes, the last coming in the final 27 seconds
when a three-pointer by Sharell Kyle gave the Tigers a 27-26 edge,
which they would take into the lockerroom.
The Tigers maintained their lead for the first 7:20 of the
second half until a bucket by Allyson Lethbridge knotted the score
at 35-35 with 12:40 to go in regulation. Then a putback by Willison
on the Blazers' next possession gave Hood its first lead of the
stanza.
The Blazers pushed the lead to five (46-41) on another layup by
Willison with 8:53 to go. But the Tigers ripped off eight straight
points in a span of just 2:45 to assume a 49-46 advantage. Danielle
Pettis had a pair of threes in the spurt.
Hood rallied once again and reclaimed the lead on a conventional
three-point play by Jessica Parrish, which put the Blazers up
51-49. Trinity tied it on their next trip down the floor on a
jumper by Morgan Kellman, but the Blazers countered with a trey by
Lethbridge, giving Hood a lead it would not relinquish. Trinity
made just two of its final nine field goal attempts in the final
five minutes of regulation.
Willison connected on 13-of-28 from the floor in 34 minutes of
action while Lethbridge finished with 20 points for the second
consecutive game to go along with six steals. Parrish chipped in
nine points and four assists off the bench while Sara Wastler
finished with seven points, nine rebounds and 10 assists.
Pettis paced the Tigers with 19 points while Kyle had 18 and
Kellman contributed 10.
The Blazers open up Capital Athletic Conference play Wednesday
hosting York College (Pa.) at Frederick Community College at 6 p.m.
