STEVENSON, Md.--Freshman Allyson Lethbridge poured in a
game-high 20 points to lead the Hood College women's basketball
team (5-18, 3-12 CAC) to a 39-34 victory over the Villa Julie
College Mustangs (7-17, 4-11 CAC) Wednesday in a Capital Athletic
Conference contest.
The Blazers surrendered a season-low 34 points in the contest as
VJC shot just 21.7 percent from the floor for the game. It was the
fewest points Hood had surrendered since allowing 32 in a 78-32 win
over College of Notre Dame (Md.) Jan. 14, 2004.
Lethbridge connected on 7-of-9 from the field, highlighted by a
4-of-4 effort from distance, for more than half of Hood's total
scoring output. It was her second 20-point scoring effort of the
season.
Hood led 13-4 midway through the first half and lost the lead
only briefly when Kristen Steiner hit a layup with just under five
minutes to play to put Villa Julie on top 15-13. But the Blazers
put together a 6-0 spurt on a Lethbridge trey, a Jen Willison layup
and a free throw by Whitney Schultheis to take a 19-15 lead in the
closing minutes of the half. Hood led 19-17 at intermission.
The Mustangs raced out of the gates in the second half, reeling
off 11 unanswered points to quickly build a nine-point advantage
four minutes in. Hood erased the deficit with a 7-0 run and
regained the lead on another Lethbridge three with 7:25 to go in
regulation. The Blazers would not relinquish that lead and held on
for the win as Villa Julie misfired on its last four field goal
attempts down the stretch.
Willison finished with nine points and six rebounds while
Jessica Parrish had a stellar all-around game, finisging
with career-highs of 11 rebounds, five assists
and six steals.
