FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Kelsey Blackwell scored a game-high
five goals and senior Lauren Lieb tallied 14 saves for the Hood
College women's lacrosse team (3-11) in an 11-10 victory over
visiting Ferrum College (3-8) Saturday on Senior Day at Thomas
Athletic Field.
Hood scored the game's first three goals in a span of 6:32.
Brandy Noel got the Blazers on the board with an unassisted tally
just 26 seconds into the contest. Britney Colandreo then assisted
Blackwell on her first score of the afternoon four minutes later
and Sarah Balukoff cashed in on a free position shot to give the
Blazers a 3-0 cushion.
Cara Jacobs registered her first of three goals on the afternoon
at the 20:28 mark, but on the ensuing draw, Blackwell raced down
the field and notched her second goal of the day just nine seconds
later. Ferrum scored a pair of goals within a span of 20 seconds to
cut the Blazer lead to 4-3, but Hood ripped off three more
unanswered goals, two by Blackwell and one by Noel, to make it 7-3
Hood with 1:09 to play in the half. Jacobs snuck one past Lieb on a
free position shot with 30 seconds left and the Blazers took a 7-4
edge into the break.
Four minutes into the second half, Ferrum's Lindy Williams was
whistled for her second yellow card of the game. Since the Panthers
had no available subs, they were forced to play a man down for the
remainder of the contest. But the visitors rallied to score three
of the first four goals of the second half to close to within 8-7
midway through the stanza.
Colandreo notched her fifth goal of the season at the 19:01 mark
but Ferrum responded when Corinne Musanti scored off a pass from
Olivia Mendoza 30 seconds later. Jen Graham then fed a cutting
Jayme Frost in front of the goal and Frost was able to finish for
her seventh score of the season to make it 10-8. Jacobs and Musanti
then scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 10-10 with
10:58 to play.
Just 1:32 later, Blackwell ripped her fifth goal of the
afternoon off a feed from Frost to regain the lead for the Blazers.
That score proved to be the game-winner for Hood, which surrendered
just two Panther shot attempts the rest of the game.
Ferrum outshot the Blazers 37-18 but Hood's solid defense in the
closing minutes proved to be the difference in the jubilant senior
day triumph.
Hood travels to Trinity University Tuesday for a 4 p.m.
nonconference contest.
