FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Jessica Devine scored twice for the
Hood College women's soccer team (5-4-1) as the Blazers and Goucher
College Gophers (4-3-1) dueled through thunderstorms and a
lightning delay of an hour and 17 minutes only to end up in a 2-2
tie Tuesday at Thomas Athletic Field.
Devine netted her fifth goal of the season in the 40th minute
from 20 yards out to put the Blazers on top. Abby Dyjack was
credited with the assist. Hood outshot the Gophers 14-1 in the
first half but Goucher's Kellen Matthews came up with six saves to
keep the Gophers in it.
But when the teams broke for halftime, the storm clouds moved
in, forcing both teams and game personnel indoors. After waiting
over an hour for the inclement weather to pass, the squads resumed
with the second half a little after 6 p.m.
Just over five minutes into the second stanza, Carlie Colella
fed Devine for her second score of the contest to give Hood a 2-0
cushion. Colella registered her team-leading eighth assist on the
play.
But the Gophers got right back into it thanks to back-to-back
goals by Sisley Pumilia in a span of 11:04. Pumilia's first goal at
the 63:50 mark ended a Blazer string of 482:23 without allowing a
goal dating back to Sept. 9. The Blazers held a sizeable edge in
shots once again in the second half (12-4) but were unable to net
the go-ahead goal, sending the game into overtime, Hood's third of
the season.
Hood had a pair of chances in the extra session; Alexa Hubicki's
point blank shot was saved by Matthews and a Whitney Boyer attempt
trickled just wide of the net in the final seconds.
The officials halted the contest after the first overtime due to
darkness.
The Blazers, now unbeaten in five consecutive contests, return
to action Wednesday at Shenandoah University for a 7 p.m.
nonconference tilt.
