FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team (3-16,
1-9 CAC) played an impressive first half but could not sustain the
firepower from the No. 25 University of Mary Washington Eagles
(16-3, 8-2 CAC), falling 70-35 Saturday at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School.
The Blazers found themselves down just one to the second-ranked
team in the CAC with 8:35 to go in the first half following a Jen
Willison layup. But Mary Washington's Katy Larson buried UMW's
final three field goals of the half, all from distance, to give the
Eagles a 27-19 halftime advantage.
However in the second half, the game got away from the Blazers
early, as the Eagles used an 11-2 run over the first 2:13 to assume
a 17-point lead and Hood got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Willison paced the Blazers with a game-high 17 points and pulled
down seven rebounds while Jessica Parrish notched 13 points and
also grabbed seven boards. Sara Wastler connected on 1-of-3 from
behind the three-point arc and with her next triple will become the
fourth Hood women's basketball player to amass 100 three-point
field goals in her career.
Larson drained five three-pointers for 17 points for the
victors. The Eagles collected 22 assists on 29 field goals and
outrebounded the Blazers by 21.
Hood returns to action Monday hosting Gallaudet University at 6
p.m. at Frederick Community College.
