DOVER, Del.--Freshman Lindsey Campbell's penalty kick in the
63rd minute proved to be the difference for the Wesley College
Wolverines (5-7, 2-3 CAC) in a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference
victory over the Hood College women's soccer team (7-4-1, 2-3 CAC)
Friday evening.
Hood and Wesley are now tied for sixth place in the CAC
standings with identical 2-3 league marks.
The Blazers and Wolverines played to a scoreless first half.
Wesley outshot the Blazers 9-4 in the first stanza, but Hood junior
goalkeeper Rachelle Buhrman kept her team in it by making six
first-half saves. But 17:29 into the second half, Campbell cashed
in on a penalty kick opportunity, Wesley's first of the season,
registering her second goal of the fall.
Hood's best chance at the equalizer started in the 71st minute
when freshman Becky Leathers fired the first of three Blazer shots
on target. But Leathers' attempt, as well as shots off the feet of
classmate Stephanie Taylor and junior Katherine Rendon, were turned
aside by Wolverine netminder Sydney Kahan, who preserved Wesley's
fifth shutout of the season.
Buhrman finished with seven saves for the Blazers while Kahan
rejected six shots for the hosts.
Hood's next contest will pit the Blazers against one of their
most ardent rivals in the conference, the Stevenson University
Mustangs. The Blazers and Mustangs will square off Wednesday at
Thomas Athletic Field at 4 p.m. in a rematch of last year's CAC
tournament first round game. Following 110 minutes of scoreless
soccer, Hood emerged victorious in that contest after a dramatic
shootout for the program's first-ever CAC playoff victory.
Stevenson is currently in fifth place in the CAC with a 2-1 league
record.
