FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team (0-2)
came up short in a 67-59 nonconference decision to the Averett
University Cougars (2-0) Friday evening at the Odom Fitness Center
at Fort Detrick.
The Cougars used a decisive spurt at the end of the first half
to assume a double-figure lead by halftime. With the score knotted
at 25-25 following a basket by Hood's Jessica Parrish with 2:31 to
go in the opening stanza, the Cougars ripped off the final 11
points of the period to take a 36-25 lead into the locker room.
After trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, Hood managed
to whiddle the deficit down to five, 57-52, at the 6:37 mark on an
Allyson Lethbridge jumper. But Hood would draw no closer the rest
of the way as the Cougars made 6-of-9 foul shots in the final 1:41
to clinch the victory.
Averett's Matte Scheiman poured in a game-high 20 points,
including two triples, to lead four Cougars in double figures.
Hood's Dyanna Prater paced the Blazers with 16 points and seven
steals while senior Jen Willison notched a double-double with 12
points and 10 rebounds. Lethbridge finished with 14 points and
Parrish contributed six points, five boards and three assists.
The Blazers are idle until Nov. 30 when Hood travels to
Washington, D.C., to take on the Trinity University Tigers at 7
p.m.
