ARLINGTON, Va.--The Hood College women's basketball team (4-18,
2-11 CAC) hung with the Marymount University Saints (17-4, 10-2
CAC) in the early going but could not sustain their momentum,
falling 77-59 in a Capital Athletic Conference game Saturday
afternoon.
Hood made five of its first nine shots from the floor and held a
15-12 edge on the Saints following a three-pointer by Allyson
Lethbridge at the 13:29 mark. Later in the half, the Blazers
trailed by just one, 20-19, before the Saints went on a 13-5 run
over 3:08 to go up 33-24 with 7:39 to play. Lethbridge swished a
jumper on Hood's next possession but then both teams went cold from
the floor as neither squad scored for a stretch of 4:24. A Beth
Wiggins layup snapped the drought at the 2:57 mark and the Saints
would take a 44-28 advantage into intermission.
Marymount scored the first eight points of the second half and
shot 52.0 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes to remain
in second place in the league standings.
Lethbridge paced the Blazers with 18 points to go along with
five rebounds and four assists. Jen Willison and Jessica Parrish
tallied 10 points apiece for the Blazers. Willison is now 22 points
away from reaching the 1,000-point plateau. Jess Head connected on
4-of-6 from the floor for a career-high nine points off the bench.
Kathleen Brown led four Saints in double figures with 14 on
6-of-8 shooting.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday hosting Wesley College at
Gov. Thomas Johnson High School at 6 p.m. Hood will honor seniors
Jess Head, Jessica Parrish and Sara Wastler before the contest.
