WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Washington & Jefferson College
Presidents (1-0) scored the first nine goals of the contest and
held on to win their season opener, 14-8, over the Hood College
women's lacrosse team (2-2) Saturday in nonconference action.
Laura Peery got W&J on the board in the first 26 seconds of
the game with the first of her game-high four goals off a feed from
Courtney Schrock. Hood's Jen Graham put an end to the Presidents'
run with her fourth score of the season with 7:59 left in the first
half. Brandy Noel and Kelsey Blackwell also found the back of the
net in the closing minutes of the stanza to pull Hood to within 9-3
at intermission.
The Blazers and Presidents matched goals in the second half.
Hood closed to within 11-8 with 9:09 to play in the game on Sarah
Balukoff's fourth tally of the spring. But the Presidents' kept the
Blazers off the scoreboard the rest of the way and added three more
scores for the final margin.
Blackwell and Noel both finished with hat tricks while Balukoff
and Graham added single tallies for Hood. Sam Liptrap made a
career-high 16 saves in the net for the Blazers.
Hood returns to action Monday when it travels to Hollins
University for a nonconference game at 4 p.m.
