FERRUM, Va.--The Hood College women's lacrosse team (8-6) broke
the program record for victories in a season Friday after defeating
Ferrum College (3-8), 9-2, in nonconference action.
Hood finished the season with a 7-1 nonconference mark and won
its eighth game of the season, eclipsing the single season record
of seven by the 2005 squad.
Katie Vu gave the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead just 2:47 into the
game with her 12th goal of the season. Then midway through the
period, Vu, Britney Colandreo and Brandy Noel scored a trio of
goals within a span of 3:30 and the Blazers led 4-0 at
intermission.
After Kelsey Blackwell and Jen Graham netted back-to-back scores
within the first 5:05 of the second half, Ferrum broke through on
an unassisted score by Phylicia Garner with 23:02 left in
regulation. Amanda Hardnack found the back of the net off a feed
from Monica Samayoa to make it 6-2 Hood, but Noel, Graham and Sarah
Balukoff added single tallies in the final 7:04 to clinch the
historic win.
Sam Liptrap made 12 saves in the net for Hood while Velena
Taylor made eight stops for Ferrum.
Hood, currently in seventh place in the Capital Athletic
Conference, wraps up the regular season Tuesday hosting
fourth-place Stevenson University in a must-win game at 4 p.m. at
Thomas Athletic Field.
