FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's soccer team (5-2-1)
rallied twice and would eventually earn a 2-2 tie with the visiting
Washington College (Md.) Shorewomen (3-2-1) Tuesday afternoon at
Thomas Athletic Field.
Despite combining for 15 shots, including eight on net, the
Blazers and Shorewomen played to a scoreless tie after the first 45
minutes.
But nearly eight minutes into the second half, WAC got on the
board when freshman forward Jen Stafford registered her first goal
of the season off a feed from sophomore forward/midfield Kira
Pancotti. The Blazers responded less than four minutes later when
sophomore midfielder Jessica Devine headed in a corner kick from
classmate Carlie Colella for her fourth goal of the season.
Then in the 62nd minute, Washington's Stephanie Willingham took
a free kick and found Gabby Devaud who put one past Hood keeper
Rachelle Buhrman to regain the lead for the visitors.
Hood kept fighting, peppering the WAC net with 17 shots in the
second half, including nine on target. With 10:55 to play in
regulation, the Blazers were awarded a penalty kick and selected
sophomore Casey Miller to take the shot. Miller booted her attempt
to keeper Tori Ripple's right and into the back of the net to knot
the score at 2-2.
Hood had three chances to net the game winner in the final 10
minutes but all three attempts, including a header by leading
scorer Cara Jordan in the final 30 seconds, were punched out by
Ripple, sending the game into overtime.
Buhrman preserved the tie late in the first extra session when
she denied Willingham's attempt with 11 seconds left, forcing a
second overtime.
Hood outshot the Shorewomen 3-1 in the second overtime and
attempted three corners but was unable to convert as the two squads
walked away with the draw.
Buhrman finished with seven saves for Hood while Ripple made 14
stops for the Shorewomen.
The Blazers return to action Saturday hosting Chatham College at
3 p.m. in the second game of a soccer doubleheader at Thomas
Athletic Field.
