FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's soccer team (1-1, 0-1
CAC) suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of the visiting York
College (Pa.) Spartans (2-0, 1-0 CAC) in the Blazers' first game on
the new turf field Thursday.
The Spartans, who advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference
title game in 2008, came into the game having outscored the Blazers
24-0 in the previous five matchups between the two schools. Hood
quickly put an end to that scoreless drought just 3:25 into the
game when sophomore Jessica Devine netted her first goal of the
fall, becoming the first Hood player to find the back of the net on
the new turf field. Junior Cara Jordan found Devine at midfield who
dribbled past her defender and beat York keeper Sarah Spanarkel to
her left.
Junior Ali Jones evened things up in the 15th minute when she
notched her second tally of the season on an unassited score.
The Spartans continued to pressure Hood netminder Rachelle
Buhrman in the second half, outshooting the Blazers 14-1. Buhrman
rejected nine of York's shots on goal but was unable to contain
Jones, who scored what proved to be the game-winner off a feed from
junior Steph Mergler in the 60th minute.
Hood's lone shot on goal came within the first 23 seconds of the
second half off the foot of Carlie Colella, but Spanarkel was there
for the save and the Spartans would not surrender another Blazer
shot attempt the rest of the way.
Buhrman put forth a valiant effort in goal, making 12 saves, as
the Blazers were outshot 23-4 on the day.
Hood hosts its second straight Capital Athletic Conference
opponent in Gallaudet University Sunday. Game time is set for noon.
