STEVENSON, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team (2-6,
0-3 CAC) dropped a 69-55 Capital Athletic Conference decision to
the Stevenson University Mustangs (2-7, 1-2 CAC) Saturday evening
at the Student Union Gymnasium.
Hood led by as many as six in the opening half when a layup by
Stacey Jones put the Blazers up 12-6 at the 11:56 mark. But
Stevenson used an 11-3 spurt to assume a 17-14 edge 3:40 later and
would not surrender that lead the rest of the stanza. The Mustangs
went into the lockerroom up 28-24.
Stevenson opened the second half with a 15-4 run over the first
4:25 which translated into a 15-point bulge. Hood received
back-to-back triples from Dyanna Prater and Allyson Lethbridge to
trim the gap to single digits (43-35). But the Mustangs pushed the
lead back to 14 on a pair of layups by Melissa Robinson and Jasmine
Jarrett and a jumper by JaQuelia Conley to make it 49-35 midway
through the period.
Hood held the Mustangs scoreless for a span of 3:22 and closed
to within seven on a conventional three-point play by Jen Willison
to draw the Blazers to within 53-46 with 3:39 remaining. But on its
next possession, a pair of free throws by Stevenson's Brittney
Bryant sparked a 15-2 surge over a span of 1:45 to put the game out
of reach.
Prater paced the Blazer attack with a season-high-tying 17
points, including three treys, while Lethbridge finished with 15
points and Willison added 11.
Conley led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The
Mustangs also picked off 17 steals and blocked 11 shots in
registering their first CAC win of the season.
Hood is back in action Monday hosting nonconference foe Norwich
University at 6 p.m. at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
