Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Ashley Beall
connected on one of her five kills to cap a 25-20 win in the fourth
set and lift the Hood College volleyball team (7-14) to a
triumphant 3-1 nonconference victory (26-24, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20)
over Penn State Harrisburg (10-19) on Senior Night at Gambrill
Gym.
The Blazers came into tonight's match looking to avenge a
five-set loss to the Nittany Lions from September. Hood and PSU
Harrisburg engaged in a see-saw battle throughout the entire night.
Senior Ally
Austin served up an ace that just barely grazed the endline to
secure a 26-24 win for Hood in the first set.
The Blazers then scored the first seven points of the second
set, which included four aces by first-year Amy Hagerdon. After
a Nittany Lion timeout, the visitors rallied to tie the score at
10-10 on a Blazer attack error. Neither team was able to push their
lead beyond three the rest of the way. Penn State managed to knot
the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win.
Hood trailed for most of the third set until the Blazers reeled
off four straight points to leapfrog the Lions 13-11, capped by a
Kristina
Straub kill. Hood would not trail again in the frame and went
on to take the third set, 25-20.
Set number four was another nip-and-tuck affair but Beall
stepped up in the clutch and collected a pair of kills for Hood's
final two points, including the match-clincher.
Sophomore Brittany
Lethbridge posted a team-high nine kills while Kristan Hawkins
put down eight. Senior Chelsea Weaver
registered 20 digs, four kills and three aces in her final match in
the blue and grey. Straub had a solid all-around match in her
collegiate finale with seven kills, eight assists and 13 digs.
Senior Beth
Arsenault served up an ace and chipped in a pair of kills while
classmate Ally Austin contributed two digs and an ace.
The Blazers finished the 2010 campaign with the most wins for
the program since the 2005 season.
