FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Kelsey Blackwell registered six points on
five goals and one assist but it was not enough as the Hood College
women's lacrosse team (2-5, 0-4 CAC) fell to the visiting Marymount
Saints (1-5, 1-1 CAC), 22-10, in a Capital Athletic Conference game
at Thomas Athletic Field.
MU's Maria Eiden got the Saints on the board within the first
minute of the game with her fourth goal of the season but Hood's
Caitlin Lawrence countered right back with her 12th score of the
spring off a pass from Brandy Noel. The Saints then pulled away by
scoring the next eight in a row to assume a 9-1 edge midway through
the first quarter.
Hood got its offense clicking by scoring six of the game's next
seven tallies, four of which came from Blackwell, to draw to within
10-7 with 6:12 to play in the half. Eiden closed the period with
her fourth goal of the stanza to give the Saints an 11-7 cushion at
the break.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first as the
Blazers and Saints traded goals at the onset. MU reeled off five
more unanswered goals to go up 17-8 at the 20:12 mark. Blackwell
had a hand in Hood's final two scores of the game but the Saints'
offense was too much as MU recorded five of the afternoon's final
six goals.
Blackwell matched her career-high with five goals to pace the
Blazers while Lawrence registered her third hat trick of the
season. Jessie Teague and Katie Vu contributed two assists apiece
in defeat. Sam Liptrap faced 42 Marymount attempts and made 16
saves, including 11 in the opening half.
Tancy Weatherford and Eiden scored five goals apiece for MU
while Sara Horne, Shantelle Valdez and Stephanie Flood had
multi-goal games.
Hood will be idle for the next 10 days before traveling to
Shenandoah University March 25 for a 7 p.m. nonconference game.
