FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's tennis team (0-7, 0-1
CAC) dropped a narrow 5-4 Capital Athletic Conference decision to
the visiting York College (Pa.) Spartans (4-5, 2-2 CAC) Thursday at
Baker Park.
Hood started the match by taking two of three doubles matches.
The first doubles tandem of Jillian Elkaim and Emily Schrodel
ousted Paige Doutrich and Katelyn Acker, 8-3, while Dani Hunt and
Emily Maerz teamed up to defeat Samantha Brenner and Megan McCullen
by the same margin at second doubles.
The Spartans rallied during singles play, capturing three of the
first four contests to assume a 4-3 lead in the match. Hood's Laura
Saad upended McCullen at fourth singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to knot the
match at 4-4.
The deciding match pitted Hood's Casey Miller against York's
Maria McFaulds at the No. 6 position. After McFaulds took the first
set, 6-3, Miller responded with a 6-2 win in the second set to
force a decisive third set. Miller put up a valiant effort but came
up just short, falling 6-2, and the Spartans clinched the victory.
Maerz was Hood's other winner in singles action, cruising to a
6-0, 6-4 win over Doutrich for her first collegiate singles
triumph.
The Blazers next journey to Salisbury University Sunday for a 1
p.m. match.
