ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The Hood College women's tennis team (3-9,
1-3 CAC) won its first Capital Athletic Conference match of the
season, 5-4, over St. Mary's College (Md.) (9-6, 1-3 CAC) Wednesday
afternoon at the Somerset Tennis Complex.
After dropping its first eight matches of the season, Hood has
registered wins in three of its past four outings.
The Blazers bested the Seahawks in doubles, winning two of the
three matchups. Jillian Elkaim and Emily Schrodel ousted Michelle
Compton and Chelsea Bradcovich, 8-6, at No. 1 to up their record to
5-4 overall. Dani Hunt and Emily Maerz teamed up to knock off Beth
Handy and Katie Lackler, 8-3, to move to 3-2 as Hood's No. 2
doubles tandem.
Elkaim and Maerz were both straight set winners at first and
second singles, respectively, while Laura Saad and Schrodel both
suffered tough defeats in three sets at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots,
respectively.
With the match tied at 4-4, Hunt brought home the clinching
singles victory at No. 4, 7-5, 6-1, over Marie Rau. She improves to
3-0 at that position on the season.
The Blazers square off against their second of three straight
CAC opponents Thursday when they entertain the Wesley College
Wolverines at 3:30 p.m.
