FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's lacrosse team
(4-9) snapped what would have been a three game winning streak with
a loss to Ferrum College (11-4) by the score of 10-6 Friday
evening.
Ferrum started the scoring early in the contest on back-to-back
goals by Brooke Hewartson, who leads NCAA Division III in scoring.
Hood began battling back immediately when Caitlin Lawrence
scored a mere 30 seconds later. Both teams traded the ball on a
series of turnovers and then Katie Vu tied the game for
the Blazers halfway through the first half. Hoping for a momentum
shift, Ferrum thwarted Hood's hopes with three quick goals to take
the lead, 5-2. Vu tallied her second goal of the game as the half
ended, with Ferrum holding the lead, 6-3.
Coming out in the second half, Ferrum scored on a free position
goal by Phylicia Garner. Hood began crafting their comeback and
though Vu was out with a yellow card, Hood's Kelsey Blackwell
scored a short-handed goal off an assist by Lauren Perzan. With
Vu back in the game, Blackwell scored again a minute later.
Julia Banks
added a free position goal and Hood pulled within one, 7-6. Ferrum
turned up the heat and scored three more times on goals by
Hewartson, Garner and Cara Jacobs to solidify the game, 10-6.
Hewartson led the scoring for Ferrum with four, Jacobs added
three, Garner provided two, and AnnMichelle Bolt tallied one. The
Blazers were led by Vu and Blackwell who both tallied a pair and
Lawrence and Banks each had one. Ferrum outshot Hood 30-20 and
Blazer goalie Sam Liptrap walked away with 10 saves.
The Blazers go on the road for a conference match-up against
Stevenson University on Apr. 12. Start time is scheduled for 4
p.m.
