Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The frontcourt tandem of Kristen Haley and Jaimie Sapp combined for 40 points to lead the York College (Pa.) women's basketball team (10-9, 7-4 CAC) to a 64-59 Capital Athletic Conference win over the Hood College Blazers (7-10, 2-8 CAC) Saturday evening at the Odom Fitness Center.
The Blazers and Spartans played to an even 19-19 score by halftime. Sapp connected on her first four attempts from the field over the first 2:39 of the second stanza to give the guests an eight-point advantage (29-21). Later in the half, a triple by Hood's Allyson Lethbridge drew the Blazers to within two, 31-29, at the 15:06 mark, but York responded with a three of its own on its next possession.
After the Blazers closed to within one on an Emily Maerz trey at the 11:32 mark, York reeled off the next seven straight points to go up 44-36. The Spartans' biggest lead swelled to nine on two occasions but the Blazers put up a fight down the stretch.
Trailing by four with 42 seconds to go in regulation, Jessica Talley fouled Haley who went to the line for two. She missed both free throws and Maerz came down with the board. Hood's next two attempts were off the mark but Haley was whistled for a foul on Dyanna Prater's shot from behind the arc. She made two of her three foul shots to cut the deficit to 60-58 with 15 seconds left. Talley fouled Aja Wallpher on the inbounds and this time Wallpher dropped in both free throws to make it a four-point game again.
Khadija Mitchell fouled Prater again who this time hit 1-of-2, making it 62-59 with nine ticks showing on the clock. Maerz then fouled York's Gayle Exley, who came up empty on both of her attempts from the stripe, leaving the door slightly ajar for Hood. Kristen Byers hauled in the second miss but Prater lost the handle on the exchange, giving the ball back to the Spartans. Byers fouled Mitchell, who knocked down both free throws for the final margin, 64-59. A desperation three by Prater at the buzzer was off the mark.
One of the smallest players on the Blazer roster, Prater played big and finished with a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Talley also crashed the boards, grabbing 12 caroms on the night. Lethbridge finished with 16 points while Briana White chipped in 14 off the bench.
Haley led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds for York while Sapp tallied 19.
The Blazers return to action Monday hosting St. Mary's College (Md.) in a CAC contest at Frederick Community College at 7 p.m.
