FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (9-15) ended its 2011 season with a 3-1 nonconference setback to the visiting Shenandoah University Hornets (16-15) Thursday evening by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 15-25, 12-25.

The Blazers and Hornets engaged in a seesaw battle in the opening set; the stanza featured six ties and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 18-18, Allie Donoghue smacked a kill and the Blazers used a Hornet attack error to go up 20-18. SU rallied to tie the score at 22-22 on a kill by Samantha Schambach, but Brittany Lethbridge countered with a kill of her own to get the side out for Hood. After a Shenandoah timeout, Amy Hagerdon collected one of her six kills to give the Blazers set point. Shenandoah drew to within one on a kill by Rachel Maki, but Kelcy Brown's next serve hit the net, giving the set to the Blazers. Hood finished with 14 kills in the first set alone.

In set number two, the two teams went toe-to-toe once again before the Hornets pulled away late. Tied at 12-12, Shenandoah outscored Hood 7-3 over the next several exchanges and Hood called timeout. The Blazers were unable to regroup and got no closer than three the rest of the way. SU posted 17 kills in the second set en route to evening the match at one set apiece.

The Hornets wore down the Blazers in the final two sets to capture their second victory over Hood this season.

Hayley Rogers keyed the Blazer attack with 10 kills and three total blocks while Lethbridge finished with seven kills and Hagerdon had six. Hagerdon notched a double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs. Theresa Schwarzwalder and Morgan Huffer tallied season-highs on defense with 22 and 15 digs, respectively. Ashley Park-Brouse contributed four blocks and five kills while Alyssa Eshleman had eight digs and one kill. Kaitlyn Hays chipped in a pair of kills while Donoghue registered three kills.

Hood also celebrated "Dig Pink Night" in an effort to raise awareness and support for breast cancer. The squad wore pink jerseys for the match and held a raffle for the fans in attendance featuring prizes from local merchants. Funds raised at Thursday's match will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, which was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services.
