FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Emily Maerz of the women's tennis team
and senior Andy Alger of the men's golf team have been picked as
the Hood College athletes of the week for the week ending April
17.
Maerz, a Middletown High School product from Myersville, Md.,
was the only Blazer to win both her singles and doubles matches
against a pair of Capital Athletic Conference rivals last week. The
Blazers took on St. Mary's College (Md.) and York College (Pa.) on
Friday at the Baker Park Tennis Courts.
Maerz started the afternoon by teaming up with Kameran Evans to
defeat Marie Rau and Sarah Minkoff at first doubles, 8-1. She then
cruised to an 8-0 victory at first singles over Rau to produce
Hood's second point in the match.
Later in the day, Maerz and junior Emily Schrodel hung tough and
outlasted York's top singles duo of Sarah Wargo and Katelyn Acker,
8-6. Maerz then upped her singles record to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in
CAC play by defeating Wargo in decisive fashion, 8-0, at the No. 1
spot.
Maerz and the Blazers (3-9, 1-6 CAC) did not qualify for the CAC
tournament, but have a pair of nonconference matches remaining on
the spring schedule, beginning with a Monday matchup at Gettysburg
College at 4 p.m.
Alger became the first Hood golfer to garner first team all-CAC
accolades with a third-place finish at the CAC championship held at
Piney Branch Golf Club.
Alger, who hails from Frederick and is a Brunswick High School
graduate, paced the Blazers with an eight-over 79 during Friday's
opening round, good for third place amongst the 25 participants.
During that round, Alger collected eight pars and one birdie at the
par 71, 6516-yard course. Saturday's second round was cancelled due
to heavy rains, so the scores accumulated during Friday's round
stood as the final results.
Alger was also recognized as the 2011 recipient of the Andrew
Geyer Memorial Award, presented to a golfer at the championship for
"outstanding academic credentials, athletics, citizenship and
community service." Geyer, a former top golfer and Dean's List
student at Wesley College, was killed in a car accident in
2009.
The men's golf team will host Stevenson University and Marymount
University Wednesday at Holly Hills Golf Club beginning at 2:15
p.m. and will recognize seniors Evan Chaney, Jacob East and Alger
prior to teeing off. The Blazers are also set to travel to Messiah
College Tuesday, April 26, for a noon invitational.
