FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's soccer team (3-5-2, 0-3 Commonwealth) lost a heartbreaker to Albright College (8-5, 2-1 Commonwealth) 3-2 in overtime. It was an exhilarating back and forth game that both teams seemed destined to win at different times. It was Albright though who had the last laugh with a goal in the 98th minute of play.
Freshman Joey Fontanez really put his stamp in the Blazer program with his performance on Saturday afternoon. Fontanez played a very good game from the striker position as he brought some much needed fire power to the Blazer attack. He struck for the first time in the 21st minute off a sweat header at the back post of an Eric Diehl corner kick. Fontanez juked out his defender and headed the ball about an inch away from the far post to give Hood the 1-0 lead. Albright answered in the 42nd minute with a goal from the squad's leading goal scorer Tyler Waters. Waters was able to get himself free at the six yard box and calmly finished a shot past the outstretched arms of Hood goalkeeper Ryan Deuber.
The Blazers came back from the halftime break with ambition in hopes of capturing its first ever victory in the MAC. Fontanez added to his breakout performance with another goal in the 53rd minute off another feed from Diehl. Diehl played Fontanez into space and Fontanez got the angle right and was able to beat Albright goalkeeper Ryan Barr with a low powerful shot. The goal gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead and real belief that this was in fact their day.
Albright answered though in the 68th minute with off a good strike from Lamar Stewart. Stewart found the ball at his feet and the Blazer defense could not coral him before he fired home the game tying shot. The game would wind up in overtime after both teams failed to find the back of the net in the remainder of the 90 minutes. Diehl had a good opportunity for the Blazers in overtime, but hit a left footed shot just wide of the left post. Albright would not miss their opportunity as Shawn Murphy bagged his sixth goal of the season off a nice header at the back post. Chris Bucks supplied the distribution and Murphy was always going to make it from only a few feet away.
It was certainly a back and forth game and both goalkeeper's made plays to help out their respective teams. Ryan Deuber made four saves on 18 shots, while Ryan Barr made one save on eight Blazer shots.
Hood returns to action this Tuesday when they take on perennial powerhouse Messiah College. The game will be on the road at 7 p.m.
