Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (2-2) got back on the winning track Thursday evening by picking up a three-set sweep over the visiting Penn State-Harrisburg Nittany Lions (0-5) at BB&T Arena.
Five different Blazers contributed at least three kills and Amy Hagerdon and Ashley Park-Brouse led the way with seven apiece. Hood also recorded 13 aces and dug out 67 balls to PSUH's 61.
In the first set, the Nittany Lions ripped off five straight points on a pair of aces and three Blazer miscues, but Hood showed its resiliency by rallying to overtake the Nittany Lions, 9-8, following a hitting error by Harrisburg. The Blazer lead would swell to seven as Addie Roop served four straight points to give Hood a 17-10 advantage. Harrisburg would get no closer than six the rest of the way and Hood put the finishing touches on a 25-15 win after a kill by Hagerdon.
Hood raced out to a 6-0 lead to start the second set and never looked back as the Blazers would not relinquish their lead. Allie Donoghue and Park-Brouse put down consecutive kills to give the Blazers set point. The Nittany Lions would get a side out but served their next ball into the net to push the Blazer lead to 2-0.
The third set was a bit more tenuous but the Blazers put it together in crunch time to close out the match in three. After Harrisburg fought off four match points, Sophie Whalen collected the match-clinching kill off a set from Donoghue and Hood prevailed, 25-23.
Donoghue finished with 14 assists and five digs while Alyssa Eshleman tallied eight digs and five assists. Brittany Lethbridge and Rebecca Reiser each had three kills and Roop added five aces and 10 digs. Lethbridge moved into ninth place on Hood's career kills list with 299.
Kaitlyn Hays played the majority of the third set and served up two aces to go along with nine digs and Keesha Fields contributed seven digs and an ace in the match. Kathryn Jones, Morgan Huffer, Roop and Whalen finished with one kill apiece.
Hood has the weekend off before returning home to host its first Commonwealth Conference opponent in BB&T Arena. The Blazers and the Alvernia University Crusaders will square off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11.
