Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. – The Hood College women's basketball team fell to Hollins University in the consolation game of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament 70-59.
Hollins' Chanci Wright led all scorers with 20 points and 22 rebounds. Hood's
Eboni Staples (
Laurel, Md. / Don Bosco Cristo Rey) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Brittney George (
Middletown, Md. / Middletown) added 19 points and six rebounds on 7-of-15 shooting for the Blazers.
After a tight first 10 minutes, Hollins took a three-point lead on three-pointer by Taylor Catron to make score 16-13 at 9:48.
Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) answered with a three of her own to make it an 18-16 game, but a 5-0 run ballooned the lead to nine points, the largest of the half, as Hollins led 27-18. Free throws by George cut the lead to six points, but Hollins responded with a three to push the lead back to nine with 2:46 remaining.
Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) scored the last three points of the half to bring Hood within six, with a score of 30-24 at the half.
George led the Blazers at the half with seven points and four rebounds. Staples had six points and eight rebounds.
Coming out of the half, George and
Danni Medovich (
Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 30-28 at 18:00.
Hollins took control of the game over the next nine minutes with a 22-7 run to give the Green and Gold a 52-35 lead. George and Staples cut the lead to 10 twice, but Hood could not get any closer.
Catron and Brandi Chesne scored 15 and 12 points for Hollins respectively. Medovich joined Staples and George in double-digits for the Blazers with 12 points.
Hollins held the advantage in rebounds 59-46, and had 21 second chance points.
Hood forced 22 turnovers and scored 20 points off of the mistakes. The Blazer defense also held Hollins to 27.7 percent shooting on the night.
Hood will have its season debut at BB&T Arena on November 21 at 6 p.m. against the Gallaudet University Bison.
