Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) recorded her third double-double of the year and Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) added her first career double-double, as the Hood College women's basketball team defeated the Frostburg State Bobcats in non-conference action this afternoon, 76-71.
Riley had 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, snagged 10 rebounds, and was a force in the paint with a game-high five blocks. George led the Blazers with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Frostburg State's Ronje James led all scorers with 31 points and had a team-high two three-pointers.
Hood jumped out to 3-0 lead on a three by Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) with 19:21 left on the clock. Smith added another bucket to give the Blazers a 10-8 lead with 14:45 remaining.
The Bobcats answered with the 8-0 run over the next few minutes to take a 16-10 lead, Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) ended the run with a jumper to make it 16-12 with 11:51 left in the half. Frostburg had the lead extended to seven twice, the largest lead of the half for either team.
Trailing 22-15 with 10:01 on the clock, Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 12-1 run that lasted for almost six minutes, and had the Blazers leading 27-23 with under five minutes remaining in the half.
Both teams traded blows over the last few minutes and with 29 seconds remaning in the period the Blue and Grey trailed 34-31. Jessy Burke (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) hit a free throw and the defense caused a turnover, which led to Smith tying the game up at 34-34 with seven seconds on the clock.
At the half, James was the only scorer in double-digits with 16, and Eboni Staples (Laurel, Md. / Don Bosco Cristo Rey) led Hood with seven points coming off the bench, on 3-of-4 shooting. Wiley had her first seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Out of the break, James scored five of Frostburg's first six points as the visitors took a 40-37 lead with 16:21 on the clock.
Within a one minute span, Wiley hit two layups to give the Blazers separate three-point leads, 47-44 and 49-46 with 10:46 remaining.
George padded the lead to 64-59 with 5:34 left in regulation, but once again the Bobcats had an asnwer. Over the next 90 seconds, James led an 11-0 run the pushed the score to 69-64 with 3:02 on the clock.
After Jasmine Walker extended the Frostburg lead to 67-61 with 2:37 left, Appleby again sparked a Hood run with a three-pointer. Appleby and George led the Blazers to a 69-67 lead with 1:02 on the clock.
Kessler added two free throws with 29 seconds left before Courtney Young hit a three-pointer with 15 on the clock to cut the lead to 71-70. George added five free throws down the strech to seal the game for Hood.
For the first time all year the Blazers had five players scored double-digits. Kessler (10 points) and Appleby (13 points) joined George and Wiley. After missing the previous three games due to injury, Staples came off the bench to score 11 points in 17 minutes.
In a game with 11 ties and 10 lead changes, Hood had the advantages in rebounds and second-chance points. The Blazers outrebounded the Bobcats 63-51, with 29 coming on the offensive glass. The extra opportunites led to 23 second-chance points, with Frostburg only scoring 15. Hood also had the advantage coming off the bench, scoring 37 points compared to 15 for the visitors.
Hood's 63 boards were a team record at BB&T Arena and just one short of the building's record of 64 set by Shenandoah in November 2011.
The Blazers will celebrate New Year's Eve with a game at 2 p.m. against the Shenandoah University Hornets at BB&T Arena.
