FREDERICK, Md.--Emily Maerz and Olivia Hosch of the Hood College women's tennis team (2-8, 0-3 Commonwealth) improved to 8-3 at first doubles and won their first Commonwealth Conference doubles match of the season, but the Blazers fell to the Alvernia University Crusaders (9-6, 3-1 Commonwealth), 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the Hood College Tennis Courts.
Maerz and Hosch cruised to an 8-1 victory over Jennifer Petrilla and Julie Seidel. Maerz was also a winner at first singles, besting Seidel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, for her seventh dual match victory of the season and eighth overall. Hosch rallied to force a third set with Petrilla at No. 2, but lost a heartbreaker in the third set, 7-5.
Hood's next match is slated for Wednesday against Commonwealth rival Messiah College at 4 p.m. at home.
