FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College women's tennis team (3-11) snapped a six-match losing skid by defeating the visiting Harford Community College Fighting Owls (4-9) by a count of 6-3 Thursday afternoon at the Hood Tennis Courts.
Hood started the match in impressive fashion by sweeping all three doubles matches. Olivia Hosch and Emily Maerz toppled Sonora Ijdo and Alex Cox, 8-2, for their 11th win at No. 1 to move into a tie atop the Hood single season wins list. Nalla Tejera and Sandra Dziadas knocked off Erika Richardson and Emilie Keith, 8-4, at No. 2 and Lauren Cevallos and Aubrey Fetters downed Ty-Chelle Williams and Mahnoor Hamayun, 8-5, at No. 3.
In singles play, Maerz rolled over Ijdo, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, and the Blazers' fifth and sixth singles players stepped up big to clinch the match for Hood. No. 6 Fetters beat Hamayun, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the match and secure her fourth singles triumph of the season. Mabie Tun also won her fourth match of the year by besting Williams, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5 to help Hood ice the win.
The Blazers also recognized seniors Maerz, Tejera and Augusta Spandler before the match.
Hood wraps up the regular season Saturday when the Blazers host the Lycoming College Warriors in a Commonwealth Conference match at 1 p.m.
