FREDERICK, Md. - A clean sweep in doubles play helped Hood College pick up its first win of the year, a 5-4 final over regional rival Stevenson at the Hood Tennis Complex.
All three matches were tight in doubles play. Rachel Hall (Glenelg, Md. / Glenelg) and Olivia Hosch (Newport, R.I. / Cushing Academy) scored an 8-5 victory against Susannah Hoblitzell and Jordan Rupard at first doubles. At second doubles, Sandra Dziadas (Long Pond, Pa. / Pocono Mountain West) and Aubrey Fetters (Frostburg, Md. / Bishop Walsh) defeated Svetlana Widell and Katie Fersch, 8-6. Mable Tun (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) and Meaghan Donahue (Walkersville, Md. / Walkersville) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Emily Ostrander and Jasey Mahon at third doubles.
Hosch and Dziadas clinched the win with their second victories of the day. Hosch, who has already surpassed her win total from all of 2012-13, outlasted Hoblitzell 7-5 in the first set, then cruised 6-1 in the second set for the victory. Dziadas also won in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Widell at third singles.
Hall forced a third set against Rupard at second singles before falling 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
The Blazers are idle until hosting Susquehanna on September 28 at noon.
