Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) scored a career-high 25 points but that was not enough, as the Hood College women's basketball team lost 71-60 to Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action this afternoon.
Medovich shot 9-of-16 and made 6-of-11 from beyond the arc, and was the only Blazer to score in double-figures. She also became the first Hood player this year to score over 20 points. Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) had 20 points on January 4, against Elizabethtown.
The six made 3-pointers tied Medovich for second all-time in a single game, and the most a Blazer has hit in a game in Emily Maerz hit six on February 8, 2012.
The Pride's Jen Egee recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Colella added in 15 points to help pace the hosts.
A 3-pointer by Smith gave Hood its first lead of the game at 11-9 with 13:47 left in the first half. Half a minute later, a jumper by Medovich extended the lead to 13-9.
Eboni Staples (Laurel, Md. / Don Bosco Cristo Rey) hit one of two free throws with 8:27 remaining to give the Blazers another four-point lead, 19-15. Egee then scored seven of the next nine Widener points, and the hosts led 24-20 with 7:08 on the clock.
Smith hit another 3-pointer to get within two at 30-28 with 3:37 left in the half, but the visitors could not muster any more offense and entered the locker room trailing 36-28.
The Pride opened up a 12-point lead in the opening three minutes of the second half, and Medovich got the score to 42-33 with her third long range bucket with 16:53 left in regulation. An 8-0 run by the hosts ballooned the lead to 50-33 with 13:10 on the clock.
With 2:14 remaining Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) hit a jumper to get the score back to 10 points at 69-59, but Hood could not get any closer.
Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) led the Blue and Grey with seven rebounds. Smith added eight points and a team-high four assists.
The Blazers hit nine 3-pointers as a team which ties them for fifth most all-time in program history. The school record was 12 set back on January 31, 2007 against Mary Baldwin.
Hood will travel to Lebanon Valley to face off against the Dutchmen on January 22.
