Blazers Drop Season Finale

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Hood College came up short in its regular season finale, losing to Lycoming College 51-36 in Commonwealth Conference action this afternoon.

Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) gave the Blazers a 5-4 lead with a 3-pointer just over two minutes into the game. Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) followed with free throws 35 seconds later to extend the lead to 7-4. 

After Julia Antelloni hit a free throw to cut the Hood lead to 9-7 with 15:53 remaining in the half the Blazers went on a 6-0 over a two minute span, sparked by a Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) layup with 15:13 to go. After Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) made it 15-7 with 13:13 on the clock, the Warriors responded with a 13-0 run to take a 20-15 lead with 9:51 remaining. The hosts took their first lead of the game since the 18:15 mark, from a long ball by Olivia Manges with 11:24 left in the half to make the score 18-15.

Hood battled back to tie the game at 20-20 with 7:13 remaining, courtesy of a three from Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach). Medovich hit two free throws with 38 seconds left to send the squads into halftime tied at 24-24.

Lycoming opened up the second half with a 6-0 over the first six and a half minutes to take a 30-24 lead. After the Blazers cut it to 30-26, the Warriors responded with another run, capped off by a three to make the score 37-26 with 9:41 on the clock. 

Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) and Briscoe scored to cut the lead to 37-29 with 5:52 left, but Lycoming answered with five points to open up a 42-29 lead with just over four minutes on the clock. 

Kessler was the only Blazer to score double-digits, as she finished with 10 point. She also grabbed seven rebounds, and Wiley led the team with nine. Hood outrebounded Lycoming by a 54-40 margin, marking the sixth time the Blazers had 50 or more team rebounds this season. 

With her nine rebounds, Wiley ended the year with 217, two shy from tying her career-high. In her career, she has snagged 632 total boards, which ranks her eighth all-time in program history. Wiley had 47 blocks this season, tied for fifth in one season at Hood. Her career total of 134 rejections is second all-time in program history. She also averaged 1.9 blocks per game during the season, which has her fourth all-time. 

Overall, the Blazers end the year ranking in the top 10 of five categories in program history. The Blue and Grey scored 1,421 points, which ranks seventh all-time. The team shot 102-of-379 from 3-point range, the third highest totals in both categories in school history. The Blazers also ended the season with 1,059 rebounds (eighth all-time), and 218 steals (ninth all-time).
