FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2014 season, and the first for new head coach Emily Maerz, in a 9-0 sweep over Notre Dame (Md.).
The Blazers swept the three doubles matches to start the afternoon. Meaghan Donahue (Walkersville, Md. / Walkersville) and Molly Masterson (Indiana, Pa. / Indiana) did not drop a game in an 8-0 win at third doubles over Zanobia Jones and Cat Bruzdzinski.
The duo of Olivia Hosch (Newport, R.I. / Cushing Academy) and Michelle Shedd (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) won 8-2 at first doubles, as did their counterparts at second doubles, Sandra Dziadas (Long Pond, Pa. / Pocono Mountain West) and Aubrey Fetters (Frostburg, Md. / Bishop Walsh).
In singles, five of Hood's players dropped just a single game each in their victories. Shedd picked up her first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles. Sophie Smith (Freeport, Maine / Freeport) won by the same score at fourth singles. Dziadas, Donahue and Kendra Laster (Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) all won by finals of 6-0, 6-1 at third, fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Hosch was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Liz Tran at No. 1 singles.
The win sends the Blazers into the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships on October 4-5 on a high note.
