Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College battled through the first period to keep pace with Ferrum College, but fell 19-12 after a second half run from the Panthers.
Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) led the Blazers with three goals and one assist and Shay Braithwaite (Montgomery Village, Md. / Watkins Mill) also added three goals. Anne Lessard (Natick, Mass. / Natick) had two goals and an assist and Brigid Ayer (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) notched two goals. Jade Locklear (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) led the team in draw controls with six. Megan Ramsey (Chestertown, Md. / Queen Anne's County) had three caused turnovers and Aleyna Fitz (Brunswick, Md. / Brunswick) had a team-high five ground balls. Lauren Couch (Crownsville, Md. / Old Mill) stopped 12 shots in goal.
The Panthers had a quick lead with back-to-back goals from Shannon Brown in the opening two minutes. Braithwaite got Hood on the board with a free position shot at 26:09 and Ayer scored two minutes later to tie the game 2-2.
Ferrum's Arielle Boyd added two more goals with 19:49 to go, to make it 4-2. McGaughey responded with a goal less than 30 seconds later from the help of Locklear to pull Hood back within a goal. The sophomore found the back of the net again a minute later off a pass from Fitz, to even the score at 4-4.
Three more goals by the Panthers made for a 7-4 lead with 11 minutes on the clock. Braithwaite scored with 9:46 remaining and Locklear followed up with another goal for a 7-6 deficit with 9:33 remaining.
The Panthers scored a minute later for a 8-6 lead, but an 8-meter shot from Braithwaite pulled Hood within one goal at 7:29 (8-7). A free position goal from Ferrum in the final two minutes made for a 9-7 lead at the half.
Courtney Hamm started the scoring three minutes into the second half for a 10-7 advantage. McGaughey made a pass to Lessard who scored with 23:48 on the clock, but Ferrum scored again 40 seconds later for a 11-8 lead. Lessard notched another goal for the Blazers at 22:54 (11-9).
The Panthers went on a six-goal run to pull ahead 17-9 halfway through the the second half. Hood had two goals from Ramsey and McGaughey with 7:18 left (17-11), but Ferrum notched two more goals to remain ahead, 19-11.
Ayer found the back of the net in the final 30 seconds to cap the scoring.
Shannon Brown led the way for the Panthers with five goals, one assist, three caused turnovers, six draw controls and eight ground balls. Courtney Hamm had a team-high six goals and added one assist. Catie Vance had seven points with three goals and four assists. In goal, Graceanne Gershner saved eight shots.
Hood remains home for a game against Lancaster Bible on March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
