WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Hood College won all three doubles matches and went on to defeat Lycoming 7-2 in the Blazers' Commonwealth Conference opener.
The second doubles pairing of Sandra Dziadas (Long Pond, Pa. / Pocono Mountain West) and Aubrey Fetters (Frostburg, Md. / Bishop Walsh) shut out Miranda Giraldo and Samantha Bruckhart, 8-0. Sophie Smith (Freeport, Maine / Freeport) and Meaghan Donahue (Walkersville, Md. / Walkersville) were 8-3 winners at third doubles against Abbey Smith and Sophie Herzing. At first doubles, Olivia Hosch (Newport, R.I. / Cushing Academy) and Michelle Shedd (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) held off Shannon Sheridan and Kaitlin Hallabuk, 8-6.
Hosch, Shedd, Dziadas and Fetters won at the top four singles flights to seal the win.
Hosch was the only Blazer to win in straight sets, defeating Sheridan at first singles, 6-4, 6-1.
Four of the other singles matches went three sets, with Hood winning three times. Shedd knocked off Giraldo at seconds singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Both Dziadas and Fetters rebounded after first set losses to claim victories. Dziadas won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Hallabruk at third singles. At fourth singles, Fetters edged past Abbey Smith 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 10-8.
At sixth singles, Donahue forced a third set, but Mariah Durant held on for a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8 win.
Hood hosts York (Pa.) in a non-conference match on March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
