Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to visiting Bridgewater, 11-9, at Thomas Athletic Field.
Four different players had two goals for the Blazers. Kara Phoubandith (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) had two goals and an assist for a team-high three points. Shay Braithwaite (Montgomery Village, Md. / Watkins Mill), Christina Murphy (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) and Jade Locklear (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) all scored twice. Locklear added four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Aleyna Fitz (Brunswick, Md. / Brunswick) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lauren Couch (Crownsville, Md. / Old Mill) made 12 saves in goal and had four ground balls.
Hood struck first, with a goal from Murphy just 26 seconds into the contest. The Eagles, however, scored three straight during a span of 90 seconds to claim the lead, starting with Sarah Yashinskie's first goal at 27:59. The three goals started a 7-1 run for Bridgewater that put Hood down by five goals. Braithwaite and Phoubandith each scored down the stretch to chip the lead down to 7-4 at halftime.
In the second half, Claire Palermo-Re and Anna O'Hara scored twice each during a 4-0 run that gave Bridgewater an 11-4 lead with 20:40 remaining.
The Blazers defense tightened up and did not allow a score over the remainder of the game. Hood scored the game's final five goals, but it was not enough.
O'Hara finished with four goals, four assists and four draw controls. Palermo-Re had two goals and two assists. Yashinskie scored twice. Rachel Gruber made two saves.
As a team, Hood went 4-of-7 on free position shots. The Eagles were just 1-of-6.
Bridgewater held a 35-15 edge in shots.
It was the head coaching debut for first-year coach Molly O'Brien.
The Blazers are back in action on Feb. 27 at Moravian.
