FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's tennis team swept visiting Arcadia 9-0 on Senior Day in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.
Before the match, the Blazers honored seniors Olivia Hosch (Newport, R.I. / Cushing Academy) and Aubrey Fetters (Frostburg, Md. / Bishop Walsh) for their contributions to the program during their careers.
Needing a win to control its own destiny, Hood got just that, winning every flight. The Blazers will serve as the three seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament. Hood faces Alvernia, the two-seed, on May 3 in Reading, Pa.
In doubles, Hosch and Michelle Shedd (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) swept Amy MacNeill and Megan Obarowski 8-0 at No. 1. Fetters and Meaghan Donahue (Walkersville, Md. / Walkersville) outlasted Zoe Foglia and Nicole Shulman 9-8 (3) at second doubles. Bianca Hoch (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) and Sophie Smith (Freeport, Maine / Freeport) were 8-3 winners at third doubles against Janelle Bradley and Maggie Karolkiewicz.
Hoch did not drop a game in her singles win, while Hosch and Smith dropped just one game apiece. Hoch won 6-0, 6-0 over Karolkiewicz at sixth singles. Hosch scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Foglia at first singles. Smith's 6-0, 6-1 win against Bradley was at fourth singles. At second singles, Shedd defeated Obarowski 6-4, 6-2. Fetters notched a 6-3, 6-0 win against MacNeill at third singles. Donahue won at fifth singles 7-5, 6-3 over Shulman.
Hood improved to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. It marks the most wins and the first .500 or better season since the Blazers went 10-10 in 2008-09.
