Records fall in senior day win

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Rachel Slater set the program's single-season record for goals scored as the Blazers picked up the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth victory in program history with a 17-6 win over Alvernia. 

Before the game, seniors Jade Locklear and Taylor Polito were honored for their contributions to the program.

Inside the Box Score

  • Slater scored six goals to give her 49 goals this year, eclipsing the old record of 45 by Locklear in 2016. Slater added nine draw controls. 
  • Locklear had eight draw controls to give her a school record 85 for the season. She also surpassed her old season record with three goals in the contest to finish with 46, which is second to Slater's total. 
  • Kara Phoubandith scored five goals and assisted on another. 
  • Rylie Benoit-Nobis made nine saves. 

How it Happened

  • Phoubandith and Locklear scored in the first six minutes to give the Blazers an early advantage but Gianna Taffo had two goals during a three-goal spurt that swung the lead to the Golden Wolves with 15:35 to go in the first half. 
  • Slater tied the game 16 seconds later before Alvernia reclaimed the lead on a Maria Panettieri with 13:26 remaining in the half. Four different Blazers scored down the stretch as Hood took a 7-4 lead into halftime. 
  • Slater and Phoubandith combined for seven goals in the second half as the Blazers outscored Alvernia 10-2. Slater's record-setting goal was her first of the half with 28:17 to go in the game. 

Notes

  • Taffo's two goals led the Golden Wolves. Angel Adams had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. 
  • Katharine Giannaras made 13 saves in 44 minutes. Samantha Rothman stopped three shots in the final 16. 
  • The win was Hood's first against a MAC Commonwealth opponent since joining the league for the 2013 season. The Blazers' last conference win was in 2009 over Wesley, when Hood was a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The Blazers' six wins this year are the most since winning eight in 2009.
