FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball team announced six incoming recruits for the 2021-22 season, including four freshmen and two transfers. "We are extremely excited with where things are with Hood Basketball and we think these six guys will absolutely help advance our program in every aspect," said Dickman.
Hood didn't have to go far to get their first commitment, Oakdale's Garrison Linton committed to the Blazers in the fall. Linton averaged 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in a shortened senior season. "We have very high hopes for Garrison and it's always nice to get a local player from a strong program. He's just scratching the surface of how good he can be. As he physically matures and fills out, he's going to surprise a lot of people", said Dickman.
Garret Cox, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard, averaged 13 points and five rebounds as a junior at Glen Allen (Virginia) High School (his team did not play this year due to COVID). Prep Hoops Virginia ranked him as a top 80 player in the state's 2021 class. "Garrett has a chance to be really special at Hood. His size and shooting ability will allow us to use him in multiple ways and I think his potential is huge," exclaimed Dickman.
Will Spencer, a 6-foot-4 small forward, averaged eight points and three rebounds for Boys' Latin School as a junior (his team did not play this year due to COVID). "Will comes from a basketball family and is a high IQ player. He shoots it and passes it really well, plus he's versatile, so that fits into our style nicely", said Dickman.
Troy Fulton, a sharpshooting 6-foot-4 wing from North Carolina, led his Lincoln Charter School to the state championship game as a senior. He averaged 17 points and four rebounds, while shooting an impressive 58 percent from the 3-point line. Fulton amassed a career record of 95-12 and ranks second in school history for three-pointers made. "We're obviously big on shooting ability and that's Troy's calling card. He'll have to continue expanding his game, but his size and shooting ability are hard to find," Dickman noted.
In a rarity for the program, Hood will also bring in two graduate transfers.
Bryce Butler, a 6-foot-1 graduate of Susquehanna University, averaged nine points and three rebounds last season as a team captain, helping the squad to a Landmark Conference championship and the Division III national tournament. He was a team captain and recently named the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Jared Young, a 6-foot-3 wing, will graduate from Princeton University this spring. Young, who planned on playing on Princeton's basketball team as a preferred walk-on this year, did not get an opportunity, as the Ivy League cancelled all basketball games in 2020-21 due to COVID.
"We don't recruit transfers frequently, but these two guys were outliers that we saw as perfect fits. They are both extremely hard workers that have collegiate playing experience, but more importantly, are outstanding leaders, players and people," proclaimed Dickman.
