Women's volleyball sweeps Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Hood College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win at St. Mary's (Md.) in non-conference action.

  • The Blazers won 25-23, 28-26, 25-17. 
Inside the Box Scores
  • Ann Ofoegbu (Falling Waters, WV/Spring Mills) had 13 kills to lead Hood, while Carrington Ray (Washington, DC/St. Andrew's Episcopal), Caitlin Ambruster (Fleetwood, PA/Brandywine Heights) and Olivia Todd (Charlotte, NC/Cox Mill) added nine each. Todd had just two errors in 15 attacks, hitting .467 in the match. 
  • Jackie Malitzki (Allentown, PA/Parkland) dished out 21 assists, ending the night with 998 in her career. 
  • Anna Daley (Erie, PA/Harborcreek) led the team four block and Katie Amaguana (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) recorded 12 digs.

  • A six-point surge early in the first set gave the Blazers an 11-7 lead but the Seahawks tied it up three times before a Margaret McGlothlin service ace put St. Mary's in front 19-18. 
  • After Hood tied it up, a block by Todd and Daley regained the lead for Hood.

  • St. Mary's appeared to have control of the set when a block by Grace Gilmore and Nancy Slaughter put the Seahawks ahead 24-20. 
  • The Blazers, however, rattled off four straight points, including back-to-back kills by Ofoegbu to tie the set at 24-24. 
  • Hood faced set point two more times before consecutive kills by Ray gave the Blazers the 28-26 win. 
Hood 25, St. Mary's 17
  • Hood tailed 15-13 but closed the set with a 12-2 run to take the match. 
  • Ray, Todd and Ambruster combined for seven kills in the run, while the Blazers did not commit an attack error during the stretch. 
Analysis
  • Hood hit .255 as a team on the evening, while the Seahawks settled for a mark of .111. 
  • The Blazers had a 43-31 edge in kills, while St. Mary's used an 8-5 advantage in service aces to try to stay in the match. 
For the Opponent
  • Megan Stevens and Gilmore had 10 kills apiece for the Seahawks. 
  • Alayna Sievert dished out 25 assists and McGlothin tallied 13 digs. 
Notes
  • It was the first win on record in program history for Hood over St. Mary's. 
  • Ambruster moved into the Blazers top 10 in kills with 487 in her career.
