Barthlow ties record on opening day

SALISBURY, Md. - Hood College's Cailyn Barthlow tied a Blazer record by homering twice in a game against DeSales, but the softball team fell against No.8 Salisbury University 3-0 and to the Bulldogs 11-10 on opening day.. 
 
At the Plate 
  • Barthlow went 2-for-4 with two homers and four runs batted in against DeSales after tallying Hood's only hit against the Sea Gulls. Five other Blazers have hit two home runs in the same game, most recently Kristy Erfurdt and Roo Saglimbeni, who both went deep twice in the second game of a doubleheader against Stevenson in 2016.   
  • Angela Acampora, who also homered and walked, and Sammy McIntosh each had two hits on the day. 
  • Mallorie Hetzel walked twice and had one hit. 
On the Mound  
  • Rebecca Gottleib got the start for game one and pitched a complete game. The first-year student allowed three runs on eight hits and zero walks. Gottleib struck out four and took the loss.  
  • Ang Casey started the second game. The first year allowed 11 runs on 12 hits and zero walks. She struck out two in a complete game loss.  
No. 8 Salisbury 3, Hood 0 
  • The Sea Gulls' Jilian Dawson scored on a double to left field by Lauren Meyers. Meyers then scored after Maddison Lendum singled to left center. 
  • Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth as the pitchers kept hitters off-balance. Lindsey Windor struck out five Blazers during that time and Gottlieb retired nine of the 12 batters she faced. 
  • Salisbury extended the lead in the fifth, scoring the last run on a squeeze bunt from Natalie Paoli that led Abby Mace to score. 
  • Windor struck out 12 in a complete game shutout for the win. 
DeSales 11, Hood 10 
  • Barthlow's two homers helped Hood nearly pull off the comeback from an early 7-0 deficit, but the Blazers came up a run short.  
  • The Bulldogs' Lily Trexler hit a two-run homer in the first before a five-run second by DeSales appeared to break the game open.  
  • The Blazers responded in the top of the third with homers by Acampora and Barthlow. After Acampora hit a solo shot to put Hood on the board, Barthlow knocked in McIntosh and Bender with a three-run blast to cut the deficit to 7-4. . 
  • Hood capitalized on two errors and wild pitch by DeSales in the fourth inning to score four times and take an 8-7. 
  • Acampora drove in another run in the fifth, as Mallorie Hetzel crossed home plate to extend the lead to 9-7. 
  • DeSales scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead. Bella Arrigo scored on a triple by Reily Kerr. Kerr would score after Kristen Suran singled to first base. The Bulldogs added two more runs after Kayleigh Ferraro doubled, scoring Alexys Vernier and Suran. 
  • The Blazers tried to mount another comeback in the sixth, when Barthlow hit her second homer to pull within 11-10 with one out, but Heather Hall retired the final five hitters to close the game. . 
  • Barthlow, Acampora and McIntosh had two hits apiece. 
  • Hetzel reached via a hit and a walk, as did Jocelyn Pfleiger and Brandi Davidson
  • Trexler led DeSales with a home run and a double, totaling two RBIs.  
Notes 
  • Hood falls to 0-2 to start the 2022 campaign. 
  • Salisbury improved to 2-0, while DeSales starts the season 1-1.
