DeProspero throws one-hit shutout in split with Franciscan


FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Hood College's Dutch DeProspero pitched a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over Franciscan. The Blazers' staff was out-dueled in the second game of the doubleheader, which the Friars won 1-0 on Hood's first day of its spring break trip. 

On the Mound
  • After DeProspero allowed a single with two outs in the first inning, he allowed just two walks the rest of the way, silencing the Franciscan offense. Hood's defense backed up its starter, as DeProspero struck out just three in his first career shutout. DeProspero has not allowed a run in his last 18 innings pitched for the Blazers.   
  • Jack Martin was nearly as good in game two. The first-year student pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Gavin Pollard pitched a scoreless sixth inning striking out one and walking one. Ryan McCreedy allowed the only run of game two in 0.2 innings in the seventh. Cole Whitton came on to finish the game and prevented further damage.
At the Plate 
  • Sam Wheeler went 1-for-3 in the opener  with a single and scored the winning run.
  • Keegan Brennan finished the afternoon with a double and a stolen base. 
  • Jacob Saylor doubled in game two. 
      
Hood 1, Franciscan 0
  • Both starting pitchers were in control for the first five innings, only allowing four hits between the two. DeProspero retired nine batters in a row from the second through the fifth innings and 18-of-20 to end the game, issuing just two bases on balls. Jacob Whitmore kept Hood off of the scoreboard, as well, allowing just three hits through five frames.Hood broke the stalemate with a two-out rally in the sixth. Sam Wheeler hit a single with two outs. A throwing error by Aiden Hickey scored Wheeler all the way from first on a grounder by Jacob Saylor to give the Blazers the lead. 
  • DeProspero finished the final two innings retiring six of the last seven batters to seal the 1-0 win.
  • Brennan led Hood with a double and a stolen base.
  • Alex Jenkins and Andrew Perkins each recorded a stolen base. 
Franciscan 1, Hood 0
  • Both teams continued to struggle at the plate against more strong starting pitching in game two. Jacob Watson limited Hood to just two hits in a shutout, while Martin scattered three hits over five innings.
  • The Barons scored the only run of the game in the seventh inning. Michael Maynard was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a base hit by Ryan Scavnicky before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Halsey.
  • Watson pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to complete the shutout. 
 
For the Opponent 
  • Watson was the bright spot on the mound for Franciscan. He struck out nine  over seven shutout innings.   
  • Scavnicky had a hit and a walk in game two and Maynard was hit by a pitch and singled.
Notes
  • Hood moved to 5-7 on the year.  
  • Franciscan took its first loss of the season in game one and ended the day 4-1.
