FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Hood College baseball team racked up 18 hits en route to a 15-7 win over Western Connecticut State.
At the Plate
On the Mound
- Gavin Pollard started the game for the Blazers and threw 4.1 hitless innings. The sophomore allowed two runs, walking four and hitting three batters, striking out four.
- After Seve Guarneschelli and Cole Whitton closed out Western Connecticut's seven-run fifth, Gabe Rivera pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four to pick up the win.
- Frank Spaide pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Hood 15, Western Connecticut State 7
- Hood sent 13 players to the plate in the second inning, scoring eight runs. Schopf, Monteleon and Jenkins walked to load the bases before Saylor hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Matt Schopf. Jenkins scored on a wild pitch for the second run. Back-to-back singles by Reyna and Haines put three more runs on the board for the Blazers to make it 5-0. Later in the inning, Stout hit a bases-clearing triple that brought in Brennan and Haines. The Blazers eight run inning ended as Jenkins singled in Stout.
- The Blazers added to their lead in the top half of the third inning. Reyna hit another RBI single that sent Schwarzman home. Reyna scored to make it 10-0 when Brennan grounded out to Kevin Smith at shortstop after three innings.
- WCSU had a big inning of its own in the bottom half of the fifth as they rattled off seven runs. Joe Gambino walked with the bases-loaded to score Nick Lepere. With the bases still loaded, the Colonials went station-to-station to score the next six runs. Hunter Loomis singled to bring in Smith. Tyler Olmo walked, scoring Max Gregory. Jake Montas singled to score Gambino. Back-to-back walks by Brian Forsberg and Lepere scored Loomis and Olmo. Western Connecticut pulled within 10-7 when Zach Edwards was hit by a pitch to score Montas for the final run of the inning.
- Hood got two runs back in the sixth inning, by way of a Schopf double that scored Stout. Jenkins hit a double of his own that scored Schopf, the lead for the Blazers was up to 12-7.
- Saylor had an RBI double and scored on a Schwarzman single in the eighth and Monteleone drove in Sam Turner in the ninth as Hood pulled away.
For the Opponent
- Loomis reached base four times for the Colonials, walking three times and going 1-for-2 at the plate.
- Montas went 1-for-2, scoring once and recording an RBI.
- Lepere and Gambino walked twice.
- Kyle Brelling took the loss. He started and gave up eight runs in 1.2 innings on four hits and five walks, striking out three. Michael Kolf, the second of four pitchers for Western Connecticut, allowed four runs in 4.1 innings on nine hits and struck out three.
