Baseball struggles against No. 13 Salisbury in twinbill


SALISBURY, Md. - The Hood College baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader to 13th-ranked Salisbury University 13-5 and 8-0. 
 
At the Plate On the Mound
  • Jack Martin started game one for the Blazers, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. In the loss, he struck out one, while walking two. 
  • Gavin Pollard allowed five runs on six hits in three innings out of the bullpen. Trey Baker pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Gabe Rivera started game two for Hood and lasted four innings, giving up three runs all unearned on four hits. He also recorded two strikeouts and a walk in the loss. 
  • Joe Alexander allowed three runs on four hits in three innings in relief. Ryan McCreedy gave up two runs in the eighth inning. 
Salisbury 13, Hood 5
  • Salisbury jumped ahead in the first inning. After back-to-back singles by Cameron Hyder and Dom Frigiola, Kavi Caster singled into right field, scoring Hyder. Caster was out on the play in a rundown, but this allowed Frigiola to score on the play, giving the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead.
  • Hyder led off the third inning with a single, two batters later Caster knocked in his second RBI of the game with a triple, scoring Hyder. After a Stephen Rice hit-by-pitch and stolen base, Sky Rahill singled into left field to drive in both Caster and Rice as Salisbury increased its lead to 5-0.
  • The Sea Gulls took control of the game in the fourth inning. Patrick Campbell was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hyder. Back-to-back triples by Frigola and Caster drove in a pair of runs.. Rice ended the scoring in the fourth with a single to score Caster, for an 8-0 lead. 
  • Salisbury added one more run in the fifth inning. Hyder doubled into the left field gap to score Scott Cameron from second. 
  • In the sixth inning Josh Barke reached on an infield single to score Caster from third to give the Sea Gulls a 10-0 lead. 
  • With the bases-loaded in the seventh inning, Rice doubled into the right field gap to score Trent Saunders and Hyder to start the inning. Later in the inning Adam Tommer lined out to Matt Stout in left field that scored Joey Bowers. Salisbury led 13-0. 
  • The Blazers finally found their way into the scoring column in the eighth inning. Schopf was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded to score Stephen Sommer. During the next at-bat, Matt Stout scored on a wild pitch. After a Jack Patterson walk loaded up the bases again, Saylor singled to knock in Sam Wheeler from third. Haines followed up with a single of his own in the next at-bat to bring in Schopf. The fifth and final run of the inning was scored after Schwarzman grounded out to Saunders at second base to score Patterson.
Salisbury 8, Hood 0
  • Salisbury jumped out to an early advantage with a three-run second inning. Cameron led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, followed by a Barke double, and a Luke Weddell hit-by-pitch to help set up a Hyder sacrifice fly to Schwarzman in center field to score Cameron from third. Frigiola singled later in the inning to bring in Weddell and Barke. 
  • The Sea Gulls scored another run after a Caster doubled and came home on a Rahill single.
  • In the seventh inning, Caster drew a walk for the Sea Gulls and would move over to second on an error by Schopf. RBI singles by Rice and Zach Geesaman gave the Sea Gulls a 6-0 lead. 
  • The scoring ended in the eighth inning as Hyder scored on a wild pitch. Frigiola scored the Salisbury's eighth run on an error later in the inning.  
For the Opponent 
  • Caster led the Sea Gulls in the doubleheader going 4-for-6, recording two triples and a double with three RBIs. He scored five times and stole two bases. 
  • Hyder turned in a 5-for-8 afternoon with two doubles, two RBIs, three runs and three stolen bases. 
  • Frigiola ended the day with a triple, three RBIs and scored three times.
  • Rice finished the day with two RBIs and a run. 
  • Jackson Balzan was the lead arm for the Sea Gulls starting game two. He recorded 13 strikeouts and only let up one hit in eight innings of work to pick up the win.     
  • Jimmy Adkins took the win for the Sea Gulls on the mound in game one. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, while striking out six.   
Notes
  • Hood falls to 7-14 on the year.  
  • No. 13 Salisbury University improved to 15-7.
