Baseball splits doubleheader at Juniata


HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Hood College Baseball team split their doubleheader at Juniata College, winning the opener 10-6 and dropping the second game 4-2. 

At the Plate 
  • Dylan Onorevole went 3-for-7 in two games with a home run, a double and an RBI. He also scored three times and stole a base. 
  • Jacob Saylor finished the afternoon 3-for-8 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
  • Keegan Brennan scored three times in game one. 
  • Stephen Sommer ended the day with two RBIs and two walks.
On the Mound 
  • Joe Alexander pitched six innings in game one, allowing four runs on five hits. He walked three and added two strikeouts and received the win. Frank Spaide closed out the game in the seventh inning, allowing two runs on two hits, and struck out one. 
  • Gavin Pollard got the call to start game two and pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Ryan McCreedy pitched two shutout innings in relief, giving up two hits. Cole Whitton threw a shutout seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Joe Monteleone struggled to hold the lead in the eighth inning, allowing four runs on five hits. He received the loss for game two. Trey Baker finished the game as he struck out the last batter of game one.        
Hood 10, Juniata 6
  • The Blazers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, bringing nine batters to the plate. After Hood loaded the bases, Monteleone hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Brennan from third. Back-to-back walks by Tyler Schwarzman and Sam Wheeler gave Hood its second run of the inning. Andrew Perkins reached second on a throwing error by Juniata's Evan Mock, scoring Schwarzman and Sommer to give the Blazers a four-run lead. 
  • Juniata scored a run of its own in the first. Isaac Maclay hit a sacrifice fly to score Joey Allegrini from third to cut Hood's lead to 4-1 after one. 
  • The Eagles cut into the lead more in the third inning, when Joey Woodrow hit a single to right field, driving in Maclay for a score of 4-2. 
  • Onorevole, playing in his first career game, homered to left to put the Hood up 5-2 after four innings.. 
  • In the fifth inning, Schwarzman and Monteleone executed a double steal with Monteleone coming home for a 6-2 lead.. 
  • Brennan scored on an RBI groundout by Sommer in the sixth. Later in the inning, Alex Jenkins came home on an error to make it 8-2.
  • Juniata tried to get back in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Will Kinchington singled down the left field line to score Isaiah Kupchinsky and Woodrow. This would cut Hood's lead to 8-4 going into the final inning. 
  • The Blazers benefited from more errors by the Eagles in the seventh. Brennan reached on another error by Mock, scoring Onorevole from third. Sommer singled down the line, driving in Brennan to push Hood's lead to 10-4.
  • Juniata did not go down quietly. Woodrow launched a two-run homer in hopes to propel a ninth inning comeback bid.  
Juniata 4, Hood 2
  • Hood would start the scoring in the second inning. After a Saylor single, Schwarzman doubled into the gap bringing in Saylor to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Blazers added another run in the third inning. Onorevole singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI base hit by Jenkings to increase Hood's lead to 2-0.
  • Juniata broke the scoring drought in a huge way in the eighth inning. Allegrini hit a two-run homer to tie the game up. A Michael Warren single knocked in Jake Swank to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. Colson Lewis hit a single down the line driving in Warren for an insurance run, making it 4-2. 
  • Malone pitched a perfect ninth for the Eagles, to receive the save for Juniata, this also avenged its game one loss.  
  • For the Opponent 
  • Woodrow led the Eagles on the day going 6-for-8 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.
  • Allegrini finished the day going 3-for-7 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs.
  • Zachary Malone was the bright spot on the mound for Juniata. He pitched in game two, holding Hood to one hit over four shutout innings.   
Notes
  • Hood improves to 5-6 on the year.  
  • Juniata gets its first win of the season ending the day 1-3.

The Blazers head on the road to take part in their spring break week-long tournament in Fort Pierce, Florida. The games begin on March 13 and end on March 18.
