Baseball falls to Messiah 8-6


GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Hood College baseball team dropped the second game of its two game series against Messiah University 8-6. 
  
At the Plate On the Mound
  • Gavin Pollard started the game for the Blazers, allowing four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out two and walked three. 
  • Jack Martin pitched 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, giving up four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two, and took the loss  
  • Ryan McCreedy pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one and walking one. 
Messiah 8, Hood 6
  • Hood took the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Sommer singled and Sam Wheeler walked to start the rally. James The duo then came home on a throwing error by Messiah pitcher JJ Zirkle.
  • Jarrett Gordon led off the bottom half of the third inning with a single. He stole second,  moved to third on a Reed Wagner groundout, and was knocked in on a Sam Zercher groundout to make it 2-1. 
  • The Blazers got the run back in the fourth inning. Jacob Saylor reached on an error by Zercher at third base. Schwarzman scored Saylor from second on a single up the middle, the score was now 3-1 Hood. 
  • Messiah took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning. Singles by Clayton Roberts and  Gordon, and a Wagner walk loaded the bases. Dustin Isanogle singled to center field to drive inRoberts and Gordon to tie the game. In a first and third situation, Isanogle stole second, the throw got  away and Wagner scored from third to give Messiah a 4-3 advantage.
  • In the fifth, Messiah's Kasey Caras led off the inning with a single. Mason Valentino reached on an error by Wheeler at second that moved Caras over to third. Joshua Ammons later scored Caras on a sacrifice fly to right field, and Valentino came around to score on a fielding error by Jenkins at third base . Extending the Falcons lead to 6-3. 
  • Hood battled back to tie the game in the sixth with four straight hits to start the inning. Haines doubled off the left field fence to start the inning. After a bunt single by Schwarzman, Jenkins tripled down the right field line to knock in both runners. Stout doubled into the right field gap to score Jenkins. 
  • The Falcons regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Isanogle singled to center field to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Helater scored on a two out error by Haines that allowed Valentino to reach first base. Messiah took a one-run lead into the seventh inning with a score of 7-6.
  • Messiah picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Roberts led off the inning with a walk and Evan Wagaman singled during the next at-bat. Jack Martin balked which advanced Roberts and Wagaman to second and third. After a Wagner walk that loaded the bases, Isanogle singled to right field to bring home Roberts from third. The Blazers had their chances but stranded three runners on base in the final two innings.              
For the Opponent 
  • Isanogle led the Falcons at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases. He scored once and walked once.
  • Roberts and Gordon each recorded two hits and scored twice. 
  • Zercher and Ammons had an RBI on the day.
  • Josh Nielson received the win in four scoreless innings of relief for Messiah. He allowed four hits and stuck out three.
  • Zirkle started the game for the Falcons, allowing two runs on three hits. He also struck out two in his outing. 
Notes
  • Hood falls to 7-17 overall and 0-2 in the MAC Commonwealth on the year.  
  • Messiah improved to 12-10 and 2-0.

The Blazers are back in action on Saturday, Apr. 2 when they travel to Eastern University for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
