FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College softball team dropped both ends of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader to visiting York (Pa.) 4-1 and 6-2.
Inside the Circle
- Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, MD/North County) went the distance to record her 17th complete game of the year in the opener. She allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and a walk. The first-year student struck out three.
- Jordan Long (Middletown, MD/Middletown) got the nod in game two and pitched all seven innings. She allowed just two earned runs on eight hits and four walks.
At the Plate
- Cailyn Barthlow (Libertytown, MD/Linganore) hit her seventh home run of the year in game two and went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
- Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School) had two hits in the first game.
York 4, Hood 1
- Gottleib and the Spartans' Taylor Lindsay kept the offenses off-balance until both teams scored a run in the fourth. Alyssa Harhigh reached on an error and later scored on an Emma Wade single for the game's first run.
- In the bottom of the inning, Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, PA/Dock Mennonite Academy) led off with a walk and back-to-back, two-out base hits by Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) and Wilson brought her home to tie the game.
- A two-run sixth for York proved to be the difference. Daphney Adams singled to start the inning but was thrown out at home by Alyssa Walters (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) on a double by Wade. Emma Keller broke the tie with an RBI double to drive in pinch runner Taylor Coon. Lindsay followed with a run scoring single to make it 3-1 when Wade crossed home.
- Natalie Decena homered in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
York 6, Hood 2
- After both teams scored in the third, a four-run fifth by York proved too much to overcome.
- Decena got the Spartans on the board, knocking in Morgan Sauers with an RBI single in the top of the third.
- In the bottom of the inning, Hood loaded the bases with no one out thanks to a walk by Walters and singles by Barthlow and Pfleiger. An error allowed Walters to score and tie the game but a fielder's choice and a double play ended the threat without further damage.
- Two errors by Hood opened the door for York in the fifth. Both miscues allowed runs to score and Keller added a two-run double in the inning as York went ahead 5-1.
- Barthlow's fifth inning home run to left center cut the deficit to three before a run in the seventh by York stretched Hood's deficit back to four.
For the Opponent
- Decena had three hits in the doubleheader, including a home run, and stole a base.
- Keller doubled in each contest and drove in three total runs.
- Lindsay limited Hood to three hits in game one, allowing a run. She walked three and struck out four.
- Hannah Vogt surrendered two runs on four hits and three walks in a complete game in the nightcap. She struck out a pair.
